Elaboration

The Elaboration series engages with Alterfact's core research into the juxtaposition between technical 3D printing ceramics and the history of ceramic craft.

The uniformity of the cylinders is both at odds with, and emphasises, the unique and organic interventions of the artists and of the material. Starting with a plain white tube, the objects evolve and transform, illustrating the potential of the printer and the beauty of the clay. Elaboration is a collection of vessels which demonstrate how particular elements can hint at perfect industrial objects, or the small idiosyncrasies of handmade.

Elaboration is presented as a linear series, becoming more complicated as the objects progress. The progression is bookended by the simplest and most organic looking of the pieces - the woven vessel. Although all other designs were digitally modelled, the woven design is a result of a fluke in the design process. Interrogating notions of authorship, and the intersection of technology and craft, Elaboration flows seamlessly from beautiful details achieved by chance, veers towards the beauty of the industrially perfected, and returns, again, to chance.

Elaboration has been exhibited at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale and is in the collection of the Korea Ceramic Foundation.
